Orderly Worship

Why We Should Foster Orderly Worship (1 Corinthians 14:20-40)

1 Corinthians 14:20-40

We tend to think that when our corporate worship time is less structured it is more spiritual. Or, worship services that are planned and organized are inauthentic, leaving no room for the Holy Spirit. The apostle Paul, however, would disagree. When did we begin spiritualizing spontaneity? When did we begin denigrating structure? Many divisions in the church at Corinth resulted from a lack of structure during worship. So Paul concludes his lengthy discussion of the all-church gathering by instructing us to foster orderly worship. According to Paul, everyone should not talk simultaneously; one person should speak at a time because God is characterized by peace and not disorder. He concludes: "Do everything in a decent and orderly manner."
